I know it's possible to edit files via the LocalFile_Editor but is it possible to move or delete images and thumbnails from admin.
- An uploader should be able to view all images he/she has uploaded and have a deletion checkbox for each and a submit button at the bottom of the page. (Maybe toggle to view as a deletion page)
- Admin or selected usergroups should have the same option but for ALL Images on a category page.
- Once submitted images and thumbnails should be physically sent to a deletion que area (a special directory seen only by admin would work great)
- Then the admin would only have to delete files from that directory and resync
Alternatively:
- a single process to physically delete the image and thumbnail then resync would be good too.

We always have in mind the question about "deletion".
1 - This is extremely risky. We don't want to be responsible for errors or deletion attacks on several galleries.
2 - Physical delete/move is often secured via chmod, and file won't be deleted. So the script won't work on any website.
About new upload:
I am convinced that upload would be done in a technical space.
- Upload in a technical folder (like a queue or a buffer: a waiting zone).
- Upload link pictures to another cat (real or virtual category) the "virtual uploaded category".
- Technical folders could be changed for upload but remain technical folders (to manage number of pictures in these folders).
- Technical folders means these categories won't never be in public or in private (no access except via a direct request by plugins, and via admin).
Currently we can't upload in a locked category, so we need something different.

Last point: In next release we have introduced confidential levels, maybe we have another opportunity there.
Confidential levels need selection tools, and management screens in admin, but they are working.

I like the sound of selection tools and management screens. :D
Maybe if your team looked at some other Open Source gallery scripts they would give you some ideas on which way to safely go. I mean there are tons of open source gallery scripts and a lot of them are great but they either suck as a community gallery or don't offer user uploads at all. Sounds like you guys got a handle on it though. :)

Yes, it's one of our targets.
